The Sterile Processing Educator is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating
educational programs and competency training for Sterile Processing Department (SPD) staff. This role
ensures all SPD personnel are knowledgeable and compliant with industry standards, facility policies, and
regulatory requirements. The Educator promotes best practices in infection control, decontamination,
sterilization, and instrument processing to support safe patient care.
1. Develops and implements orientation, in-service training, and continuing education programs for
sterile processing staff.
2. Conducts competency assessments and skills validations on all SPD team members.
3. Ensures training materials and educational practices align with AAMI, AORN, CDC, and OSHA
guidelines.
4. Supports quality improvement initiatives by identifying training needs through audits and
performance evaluations.
5. Coordinates certification preparation courses for CBSPD and/or IAHCSMM (HSPA) exams.
6. Acts as a resource for technical questions and helps troubleshoot sterilization or processing issues.
7. Collaborates with perioperative leadership, infection prevention, and vendors to stay current with
advancements in sterile processing.
8. Maintains accurate records of all training activities, employee competencies, and continuing
education credits.
9. Assists in the development and implementation of department policies and standard operating
procedures.
10. Participates in department meetings, regulatory surveys, and interdisciplinary initiatives as needed.
