Position Overview

  • Pay rate: $68.00 / hour (PM), $64.00 / hour (AM) 
  • Duration: 20-week assignment with option to renew up to 8 weeks 
  • Schedule: AM and PM shifts available; certain holidays and every other weekend required 
  • Work location: Float between UAB St. Vincent's Birmingham and UAB St. Vincent’s East  locations 

 

Job Highlights

Our Float Travel Alternative Program (TAP) is a new temporary inpatient opportunity available for nurses with at least three years of experience. In this 20-week, non-benefitted assignment, you’ll float between community hospitals UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham and UAB St. Vincent’s East, where you’ll work as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide high-quality, compassionate care for our patients on certain acute care and step-down units. You’ll have the option to renew this agreement once for up to eight additional weeks and will be required to work every other weekend and certain holidays. Current employees of UAB Medicine entities are not eligible for this opportunity. 

 

What You Will Do

Provide and manage patient care in a clinical area for specific age and patient populations. Delivers care to patients utilizing the nursing process ofassessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation and effectively interacts with patient, significant others, and other health team members while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

 

  • Provides and documents thorough and accurate patient care while working closely with primary providers, and assigned patients
  • Manages resources for optimal patient flow prepares clinical record before clinic.
  • Ensures that rooms are well stocked, clean and ready for the patient and physician for optimal 5. patient flow and to decrease patient wait time.
  • Responds in an appropriate and timely manner to adverse reactions and/or positive responses.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines as appropriate to ensure continuity of care; ensures that communication is timely, heard  and understood by recipients.
  • Ensures the educational needs of patients are met. Assesses patient education needs based on physical, cultural, religious, educational, language and age-specific criteria. 
  • Educates patients based on above assessment. Documents education appropriately. Assesses the patient's family' motivation and readiness to learn and adapts teaching based on current needs.
  • Assumes leadership role and responds appropriately to emergency/crisis situations.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills in identifying and managing emergency/crisis situations.
  • Demonstrates nursing competency in management.
  • Coordinates and manages in a calm manner. Responds to clinic wide emergency situations, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability for professional growth.
  • Meets and maintains current certification/licensure without reminders.
  • Completes all mandatory education requirements of clinic in advance of due dates.
  • Maintains knowledge of current issues through attendance or documented reading of minutes of at
  • least 80% of staff meetings.
    Serves as a role model and clinical resource person for other team members and orientees.
  • Maintains accountability for safe environment for patients and others.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding departmental operations including all regulatory agencies.
  • Displays effective communication skills by correctly calling in prescriptions at physicians’ instructions.
  • Obtains and delivers correct phone messages. Returns patient phone calls in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You Will Need

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
  • Minimum of 3 years RN expereince required; 5 years nursing experiene preferred.

 

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations: 

  • Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required.
  • Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment.
  • Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
